Our story

How HM Consultancy began

HM Consultancy began with a pattern. Again and again, people who were trying to do the right thing had a KRA PIN but had never been shown what they needed to file, or when. Most of the stress came from not knowing, not from the tax itself.

Its founder, Harriet Ndiritu, saw that pattern up close. Her career in tax and finance has spanned finance and business development, audit, accounts, bookkeeping and tax consultancy. That is where she learned how a client's records, their tax position and the advice they receive all depend on each other.

She then spent almost a year and seven months in taxpayer service, helping taxpayers with their questions. She met people who had registered for a PIN only to open a bank account or receive payment for a job, and who did not know they had to file returns. Others had missed out on penalty waivers and tax amnesty programmes.

Friends and family soon began calling her with their own tax questions, so she began offering free help, reviewing their accounts and making sure they were compliant. Over the years, that word-of-mouth support grew into a steady stream of referrals: filing returns, reviewing accounts, registering VAT obligations, registering for eTIMS and generating eTIMS invoices, and explaining obligations such as Monthly Rental Income (MRI).

In October 2026, she made it official and founded HM Consultancy, with Ian Waiyaki Githagui as co-founder. Alongside this, Harriet continues to work hands-on in finance, posting receipts and payments, keeping the books accurate, filing statutory deductions and returns, and presenting financial reports to the people who rely on them. So HM Consultancy sees tax from both sides: as people who have helped taxpayers, and as people who have to file on time and report clearly.

Today, HM Consultancy helps individuals and businesses review their finances, file accurate returns, set up eTIMS and stay in good standing with KRA. The goal is simple: to make sure you are tax compliant, hold your Tax Compliance Certificate, and never have to worry about tax again.

He began his career in accounts, working on payment vouchers, cashbooks and bank reconciliations in Sage. He then gained extensive audit experience, serving a large portfolio of companies in the hospitality sector. There he ran continuous audits, covering stock-takes, inventory reconciliations and revenue-centre controls, handled tax planning, filed statutory returns, and prepared IFRS-compliant accounts. He also grew an advisory practice alongside the audit work, turning findings into practical recommendations for tightening controls.

As a Finance Lead, he took full ownership of the finance function, from bookkeeping and budgeting to tax compliance, built internal controls from the ground up, and supported the company's growth into a multi-department operation.

Ian is progressing toward his CPA-K qualification and holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. He has completed ALX Africa's AI for Professionals programme and builds AI-driven solutions that help companies streamline their accounting and tax functions, such as his e-TIMS invoice agent, which automates the recording of invoices into spreadsheets for clients.

He also handles corporate income tax, VAT and PAYE filing, IFRS financial statements, audit support and outsourced accounting, and is proficient in QuickBooks, Zoho, SAP and a wide range of other accounting software.

“At HM Consultancy, our mission is to ensure that individuals and organisations alike are tax compliant, through our professional tax services.”
